Are purchases from charities tax deductible?

Donors who purchase items at a charity auction may claim a charitable contribution deduction for the excess of the purchase price paid for an item over its fair market value. The donor must be able to show, however, that he or she knew that the value of the item was less than the amount paid.

Can I claim a charitable donations tax deduction without a donation receipt?

You may still qualify for tax deductions on charitable donations without the donation receipt. For a cash donation of less than $250, you generally won’t need a receipt if you have a bank record or a record of your payroll deduction.

Do I need receipts for all charitable contributions?

You should keep records for all tax deductible gifts and contributions you make. When you donate the DGR will usually issue you with a receipt, although they are not required to. In these circumstances you can still claim a deduction by using other records, such as bank statements.
