Can a physician office bill for laboratory services?

If the physician’s office has a certified lab, then you may be billing for a significant number of lab procedures including the E&M services every day. Laboratories performing lab tests are required to be certified in order to bill for the same, or they may not get paid by the insurance payers.

How do you bill for outside lab services?

Physician billing for the lab service

  1. The provider should bill the appropriate lab CPT code (8XXXX) with modifier 90 to indicate it was sent out.
  2. Enter the name of the outside lab in box 19 on the CMS 1500 claim form.
  3. Bill the specimen handling (CPT 99000 or 99001) and venipuncture (CPT 36415) when appropriate.

Can doctors write their own lab orders?

There is great uncertainty and misunderstanding in the United States regarding whether or not physicians are allowed to self-prescribe. Under federal law, physicians are not specifically prohibited from self-prescribing or prescribing for friends and family.
