Can a therapist see your medical records?

Despite the rights of patients to be able to view and have a copy of their own medical records and data, most mental health professionals still resist attempts for a patient to view their own mental health chart. They’ll ask you why you’d like to see it.

Do psychologists keep medical records?

All licensed psychologists in California must retain a patient’s health service records for a minimum of seven (7) years from the patient’s discharge date or seven years after a minor patient reaches the age of eighteen. The CA 2009 Laws and Regulations p. 32 states: Retention of Health Service Records: 2919.

Can a psychologist refuse to release medical records?

Psychologists refuse to release records to patients, third parties, the courts, non-psychologists and attorneys, sometimes enlisting the courts in their efforts (although courts are rarely supportive). Denial of access is a top HIPAA complaint against health care providers.
