Can I solder a ring at home?

By Andrew Vasquez |

Place your metal pieces on the firebrick where you’re going to work. Cut a small amount of solder wire using sharp scissors. Working with a few small pieces is preferable to one larger piece of solder. Place the solder being used on the piece of jewelry using your pliers or tweezers.

Is gold easy to solder?

Gold and Silver Solders You can purchase hard, medium, and easy solders in gold and silver. Gold is available in different karats. Of course, gold costs significantly more than silver, especially in higher karats. Gold and silver solders come in different flow temperatures.

Can you solder a ring?

To soften your ring, place it onto a soldering block. Begin to heat the band using your soldering torch. Move it across the surface of the band evenly until it turns a glowing ‘cherry’ red, then remove the heat from the band. Carefully remove the band using tweezers and quench the silver in a bowl of water.

How do you bond gold together?

I like E6000-it’s a good glue to use in jewelry projects. You could use a toothpick to apply a thin layer between the rings. You will need to make sure you buy the type that dries clear. I used E6000 to bond a 2mm silver ring between 2 – 2.5mm gold rings & created a very nice 7mm pinky ring.

Can you use a soldering iron to melt gold?

Never use a soldering iron to work on precious metals because you will ruin the jewelry. Silver and gold jewelry must be torch soldered. Successful soldering involves heating the metal pieces — not just melting the solder — meaning that if a piece of jewelry is large or thick, chances are it was torch soldered.

How much does it cost to solder rings together?

On average, the price to solder rings together can be anywhere from $30 and $90+. Soldering two rings together can cost anywhere from $30 to $45, while three rings can cost $55 to $70.

Can you use regular solder on gold?

Any metal alloy designed to melt and join metal together is called a “solder,” but most solders will not work to join gold. Use “plumb solder,” “medium” or “hard” solder, or solder with 14 karat and above. Solder with a lower gold content will melt more easily, and is recommended for small repairs.

Should I solder your rings together?

Choose TO Solder Soldering your rings together strengthens the bands on both rings because two bands become one strong band. Soldering also keeps the rings from spinning and sliding around your finger; they remain as a clean and perfect set all of the time. *Take Note: Ensure that the rings are sized to be soldered.

What’s the best way to solder gold jewellery?

Place the jewellery you’ll be working on onto a soldering block and hold in place with either your tweezers or a clamp. Ensure that the gold pieces fit together as tightly as possible. Otherwise, if the gap is too large, the solder may fail. Add flux for gold soldering.

Do you need to unset a gold ring before soldering it?

Gold objects are reasonably easy to deal with in terms of heat conductivity but silver (which has the best heat conductivity of all the metals) can be a real problem to deal with. This is why many jewelers will simply unset a silver ring before soldering it.

How do you protect gemstone while soldering?

I place the ring head with the gemstone under water in a crucible while the ring is held down with a soldering weight. Using a jewelers saw one cuts off a thin slice of soft refractive kiln brick which is tucked inside the ring above the water level to additionally reflect heat upwards and slow the evaporation of the water.

What’s the best way to cool a soldering iron?

Ventilate the work area. Use fans or open windows to create a light breeze over the work area, moving potential fumes away from you. Strong breezes may make the soldering process more difficult, due to the cooling effect. Acquire copper tongs and tools for holding the gold in place.
