Does retirement Income affect Social Security disability benefits?

The majority of individuals eligible for pensions will not see any influence on their Social Security disability benefits. The key factor in this situation is whether or not you’ve had to pay Social Security taxes on the earnings which allowed you to receive benefits from your pension.

Can you apply for disability after full retirement age?

Answer: You can’t apply for Social Security disability if you have already reached full retirement age, which is currently 66. But until that time, if you are disabled according to Social Security definition, you can either collect Social Security disability or retirement benefits (but not both).

Can a retired person also collect Social Security disability?

If you do collect SSDI disability benefits, they will be converted to retirement benefits when you reach full retirement age. The only exception is for an individual who took early retirement through Social Security, which is possible at 62, before being approved for disability benefits. Disabled before early retirement benefits start.

Can you file for SSDI if you are on disability?

You can file for SSDI, and if the claim is approved, you will get a higher benefit, backdated to when you applied for disability. (You will still not get your full retirement benefit, but the “reduction factor” for early retirement will shrink from four years to just the period when you were only eligible for retirement benefits.)
