Probably the most likely place where you can find lode gold is in the Adirondacks, and the second most likely place is in the Hudson Highlands, and strangely enough right in New York City. It may look like Manhattan, but there is likely to be gold under its streets.

Gold is found where water flow is altered by obstacles such as boulders and logs or by watercourse contours, such as bends in river. Gold can also be found where two rivers or streams come together. It is what’s called a “confluence zone.” Gold will tend to build up as a pay streak in these areas.

Where do you find gold in a creek?

Placer deposits are created when gold is weathered out of rock over the aeons and moved by flowing creek water. These small particles and nuggets of gold are slowly transported down a creek or stream, and accumulate in the sand in banks, along the shore, and in rock crevices.

What makes gold collect on the upstream side of a river?

Smooth and polished surfaces don’t trap gold well. Dikes in the bedrock will trap gold in different ways. If it angles downstream, gold will to collect on the downstream side. If it angles upstream, it will tend to collect on the upstream side. Rock outcroppings from the stream sides work about this same way.
