Can you wear different karats of gold together?

By Sebastian Wright |

In an ideal world, yes. Two rings will always rub together to some degree, so if they are the same metal then at least this will happen evenly. White gold rings are plated with rhodium, so you can usually wear different carats of white gold together.

The carets of gold are different colours and have different melting points. If there is not enough gold then extra gold would need to be purchased and added. If mixing metals, the piece will only be hallmarked at the lesser value metal. So if 9ct and 18ct is melted together it will be hallmarked as 9ct gold.

Is 9ct gold the same Colour as 18ct gold?

Here’s all you need to know… 18ct gold is 75% pure gold and 25% other metals (usually a combination of silver and copper). In the case of white gold, that 25% consists purely of white metals, present to contribute a silvery hue. 9ct gold, on the other hand, has a content of 37.5% pure gold and 62.5% other metals.

Can You Wear White and Yellow Gold Rings Together? The straight answer to this is of course, yes. You can wear your yellow and white gold rings together. For example, white gold is combined with metal such as platinum and palladium.

Can you tell the difference between 14k and 18k yellow gold?

18K gold means it’s made of 75% gold and 25% alloyed metals whereas 14K gold is made of 58% gold. You will also notice the color difference between 14K and 18K gold. Jewelry made of 18K gold has a rich yellow color while those made of 14K have a lighter tone due to the alloys added.

Can you melt down 18K gold?

The problem with melting down your gold is we don’t know what other metals it has been mixed with. Even 18K gold is still 25% other metals and gold is kind of like cooking — every cook has their own recipe for that 25%. So, melting your old ring down to make a new one will yield a poor quality result.

Can a 9 karat gold ring be sold as gold?

Gold Status: 9 Karats Is Not Always Considered Gold! Perhaps one of the most important facts you should take note of is that while an 18K alloy is considered gold, this is not always the case with a 9K alloy, depending on the country it is sold in. For example, in the United States, 9-karat jewelry cannot be sold as gold.

Can you make an engagement ring out of 9ct Gold?

An engagement ring made from 9ct gold can not be expected to last more than a lifetimes normal wear. The obvious question here is why would an alloy like the 375 above even be labeled as gold. Would it not be more accurate to call it by the name of its other much larger % component alloys? It is after all only just a little over third pure gold.

What’s the difference between 9ct and 18ct gold?

A 9ct gold item will contain 37.5% gold with the rest being a mix of metals (called an alloy), 14ct will be 58.5% gold, 18ct gold is 75.0% and 22ct is 91.6% gold. Gold is a soft, malleable metal so the higher the caratage gold the softer the item will be.
