Do I have to pay nursery fees on top of child maintenance?
Maintenance can provide essential funds for a number of specific items like school fees, nursery care or any medical expenses that the child requires. It is therefore acceptable to use maintenance monies to pay for expenses like residential heating costs, but not acceptable if it is used as spending money for luxuries.
Can I refuse to pay child maintenance?
If you started paying maintenance but then realise you’re not the child’s parent. You’ll have to pay until you can prove you’re not the child’s parent. The CMS will offer you a DNA test. If you refuse to take it, the CMS will treat you as their parent.
Do I have to pay more than child maintenance?
Yes, you are not obliged to pay anything more than your child maintenance sum. I would however encourage you to consider any requests on a case by case basis. Ultimately the money is to pay for your child and so you may want to pay a little extra on one-off occasions so that your child doesn’t go without.
How many nights a year is shared care?
52 nights
If shared care happens for an average of one night a week or more (at least 52 nights a year), this can affect the amount of child maintenance. The more nights that the child stays overnight with the paying parent the less child maintenance is due.

How long does it take to do a maintenance effectiveness assessment?
The number of days required to perform an MEA may range from 3 to as many as 20 depending on the size and complexity of the business. Assessors will follow the schedule that the maintenance organization helps build. The assessors will analyse daily the results of the interviews, review the data compiled, and organize their notes.
