Do previous accidents affect insurance?

By Olivia Norman |

Even with no-fault insurance, your car insurance rates can increase after an accident. Most provinces in Canada, including Alberta, British Columbia, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Quebec, have some sort of no-fault insurance system in place.

Can I drive another car on my insurance if it’s not insured?

It’s important to understand that you can only drive a car if you have insurance. If you don’t have your own insurance policy (either on your own car including DOC cover, as a named driver on the car owner’s policy, or standalone temporary cover), you will not be legally covered to drive.

Is someone else insured to drive my car?

Usually, yes — your car insurance coverage should extend to anyone else driving your car. So if you lend your car to your best friend, your sister or even your second cousin, your insurance is most often the insurance that will pay in the event of an accident.

Who is liable if my car is involved in an accident but I?

Thankfully, in most accidents, damages will be covered by one of the involved driver’s insurance companies. It’s usually whoever was liable for the crash, making a financial recovery more likely. However, what if the person driving one of the vehicles in the accident was not the car owner?

Who is covered when another driver has an accident in your car?

Who Is Covered When Driving Your Car? It can be confusing to understand who is covered to drive your vehicle. Though policies will vary, the general rule is that anyone living in your house is typically covered when driving your car, unless expressly excluded on the policy (see “Excluded Drivers” below).

What happens if I Drive after a car accident?

If the other driver’s insurance is supposed to pay for your vehicle’s damages, and more damage happens to your vehicle because you drove after the accident, the insurance company will not cover the cost. It is crucial to know what the insurance coverage is going to be before you run the risk of damaging your car further.

What happens if you are in an accident with an unlicensed driver?

Insurance typically follows the vehicle, not the driver. This fact means that if the unlicensed and/or uninsured driver who caused the accident was driving someone else’s insured vehicle with permission, then that policy should cover the injured party’s damages—regardless of the licensure status of the at-fault driver.
