Do you have to pay back insurance money?

If you outlive the policy, you get back exactly what you paid in, with no interest. The money back is not taxable, as it’s simply a return of payments you made. With a regular term life insurance policy, if you are still living when the policy expires, you get nothing back.

Does insurance pay for lost wages?

Lost wages are typically covered by an insurance company. If another driver caused the accident that resulted in your injuries, that driver’s insurance company will often be responsible for covering your lost wages.

Do you have to pay taxes on wage loss insurance?

Many employees participate in wage-loss insurance plans that are often paid periodically by employers throughout the year. At the end of your employment, you may instead receive a lump-sum payment from this plan. In certain cases, these payments are taxable and must be reported in your income tax return.

When do employers pay for wage loss replacement?

Some employers pay wage-loss replacement contributions to an insurer so that their employees will receive compensation under a sickness, accident, disability, or income maintenance insurance plan. As a participant in one of these plans, you’ll receive payments if you lose part or all your employment income due to a serious illness or accident.

Where do you report wage loss insurance payments?

The CRA also considers these payments to be taxable income from employment. If you received a payment, your employer will include it in Box 107 of your T4A slip. This amount must be reported on line 104 of your income tax return. However, you may not have to report the full amount on your return.

Can a worker’s compensation carrier recover lost wages?

The Workers’ Compensation carrier can take the entire $10,000 for lost wages, but cannot recover anything else on its lien, because it is not allowed to dip into the jury’s medical bill award to pay for the lost wage payments it made! Again, this is complicated and the above steps are a simplification.
