Does the lighter test work on gold?

By Emily Wilson |

Jewelry that is made of fake gold, brass, iron, or copper will darken and change color. Jewelry that is gold-plated will show the gold melting and the material underneath will be exposed. The lighter test is one of the most effective ways to find out if your jewelry is real gold and many gold buyers use this test.

What color does gold turn when heated?

If gold is heated in normal heat does its color change to black? Upon cooling again to solid form, the gold will still look like gold. Gold and most other “noble” metals are very resistant to corrosion/oxidation, so they don’t change in appearance under these circumstances.

You can use bleach to check for real gold: It may not harm your real gold jewelry, but it may ruin any fake gold jewelry. Bleach is very similar to nitric acid, but keep in mind that it’s not as accurate as a test. It can prove that your gold is authentic, but it can’t tell you how pure it is.

How can you tell if a metal is gold or copper?

Although copper and brass resemble gold when polished, these metals are almost worthless in small amounts. A gold test kit will tell you if a piece of metal is gold or copper. Score a half-inch line on the flat black test stone provided in the gold test kit by rubbing the edge of the metal up and down against its surface two or three times.

How can I tell if a gold lamp is pure gold?

Hold the piece close to the lamp’s light. Rotate it in your hand, so that you can examine all of the edges in particular. If you see that the gold appears faded or worn away at the edges, then it’s likely wear on the plating. This means that piece isn’t pure gold. Look for spotting on the piece’s surface.

How can you tell if gold is plated or not?

A black line indicates that the item is not gold or is plated. Test your gold against liquid foundation makeup. Coat the top of your hand with a thin layer of liquid foundation. Wait until the foundation is dry. Press your metal item against the foundation and rub. Authentic pure gold will leave a line in the makeup.
