How do you split bills with uneven income?

Here’s how it goes:

  1. Keep your individual bank accounts, but also open a joint checking account together.
  2. Add your individual incomes together to get your total household income.
  3. Add up all the expenses you’ve agreed to split.
  4. Every month, both partners transfer their share into the joint account.

Should you split bills proportionally?

Keep personal bills separate This could be a good idea if someone uses more of one thing (like a TV subscription for example). This affords you both some financial independence over your disposable income. And it could work out fairer if one person has more personal expenses.

Is it illegal to not allow split bills?

It doesn’t matter who it’s paid by. Because of that joint liability, the contract is with the whole table for the entire amount, rather than each individual diner for what he or she ordered or is prepared to pay for. That means there’s not legal obligation to give split bills.

Why do restaurants not allow split bills?

Restaurants generally resist split bills because they take up lots of staff time — each person has to pay individually, and then the bill has to be checked to make sure everything has been covered, and then invariably disagreements ensue because no one wants to pay for the balance.

Why do restaurants hate splitting checks?

When it gets busy, we can add more servers, but we can’t add more POS or credit card machines — which in our restaurant are two separate machines, so your order gets rung up on the POS machine, but if you pay by credit card, that has to go through the separate device. So when it is busy, we just can’t split checks.
