Is it impossible to make gold?

By Olivia Norman |

You cant create gold by chemical reactions from something that doesnt already contain gold atoms. You can however create gold by taking other atoms and change their core so they become gold. This isnt done outside of laboratories because its inefficient and expensive. Far more expensive than digging for it.

Can scientists create gold?

Gold was synthesized from mercury by neutron bombardment in 1941, but the isotopes of gold produced were all radioactive. Gold can currently be manufactured in a nuclear reactor by the irradiation of either platinum or mercury.

Why can’t we make gold from lead but we can combine two gases to form a liquid?

Why can’t we make gold from lead but we can combine two gases to form a liquid? Gold and lead are elements, which are the fundamental building blocks of chemistry. The cannot be converted into each other by chemical means. But gases and liquids are phases and can represent different chemical substances.

Can you wear 24K gold?

Also known as “The Gold Standard” 24K is 100% pure gold. This is because pure gold is very soft and tends to scratch and bend easily making it impractical for daily wear in most cases.

Can we make gold at home?

Yes, gold can be created from other elements. But the process requires nuclear reactions, and is so expensive that you currently cannot make money by selling the gold that you create from other elements. Every atom containing 79 protons is a gold atom, and all gold atoms behave the same chemically.

Why did people think they could turn other metals into gold?

The reason that they thought they could turn other metals into gold is because they thought these other elements contained gold in the first place, which they don’t. Like russ watters said, it’s a nuclear process, not a chemical process.

What are the problems with making fake gold?

The problem with making good-quality fake gold is that gold is remarkably dense. It’s almost twice the density of lead, and two-and-a-half times more dense than steel.

Why is pure gold too soft for a metal?

Just pure gold (100 percent) or 24 karat gold is way too soft for a metal. This softness allows gold’s ductility (ability to be drawn into wires) and malleability (ability to be hammered into sheets).

Why did alchemists think all metals were the same?

Alchemists thought that all metals were a mixture of gold (the purest of all metals), sulfur and mercury (“impurities”), in different proportions. The reason that they thought they could turn other metals into gold is because they thought these other elements contained gold in the first place, which they don’t.
