What are IHSS requirements?
To qualify for IHSS you must:
- Be 65 years old or older, blind, and/or disabled as defined by Social Security Administration (SSA) standards.
- Be a United States citizen or a noncitizen with satisfactory immigration status;
- Be a California resident;
- Live in your own home.

Can IHSS recipient have 2 providers?
– IHSS providers who work for more than one recipient at different locations on the same work day can be paid for time spent traveling between the two recipients, up to 7 hours per workweek.

For qualified families, the state of California has a program called In-Home Supportive Service (IHSS), which pays an individual caregiver to stay home and care for a developmentally disabled child.
Can a IHSS recipient work?
You must be related to the IHSS recipients to whom you provide services as his/her parent, stepparent, adoptive parent or grandparent or be his/her legal guardian. With this exemption, you cannot work more than 90 hours per workweek or more than 360 hours per month.

Who are the care providers for the IHSS program?
Upon approval of the recipient’s service authorizations, the social worker will assist the recipient in obtaining an IHSS care provider.Care providers may include, but are not limited to, family members, friends, neighbors, or registered providers through the public authority.
What do I need to apply for an IHSS?
Obtain a health care certification from a licensed health care professional (physician, psychiatrist, psychologist, etc.) indicating that you are unable to safely perform one or more activities and without IHSS, would be at risk of placement in out-of-home care. How old do you have to be to be an IHSS recipient in California?
Recipients over 65 years of age are already eligible to be vaccinated. CDSS sent notices informing IHSS recipients about the changes made to California’s vaccination plan. IHSS recipients aged 16 to 64 can use the letter to verify they are an IHSS recipient if needed.
