What is covered under the collision coverage?

By Emily Wilson |

Collision car insurance covers your car against accidental collisions, either with another vehicle or even with fixed structures. It will also cover you if another car rams into your car while it’s parked.

Is collision part of full coverage?

Collision Insurance covers damage to your vehicle in the event of a covered accident involving a collision with another vehicle. This may include repairs or a full replacement of your covered vehicle.

What is the difference between comprehensive and collision coverage?

Collision coverage helps pay to repair your car if it’s damaged in a collision with another vehicle or object, such as a fence. Comprehensive is a separate coverage from collision. It helps cover different types of losses that are usually not the result of driving the vehicle, such as theft, hail or fallen trees.

How do you calculate collision coverage?

This is the math:

  1. Subtract your collision deductible from your car’s value. This is the most you could get from a collision claim.
  2. Take the amount above and subtract the cost of your collision insurance for the duration of the policy, usually six months.

Is it better to have collision or comprehensive?

Collision coverage pays for your vehicle’s damage if you hit an object or another car. Comprehensive insurance pays for non-crash damage, such as weather and fire damage. It also pays for car theft and damage from collisions with animals.

When should I get rid of collision coverage?

If the cost of your collision coverage is 10% or more of the value of your car, it’s probably time to drop it. For example, if your collision insurance costs you $400 per year and your vehicle is only worth $4,000, cancelling collision will save you money.

What does it mean to not have collision coverage?

If you have no collision coverage, then you will be responsible for paying to repair or replace your car after an accident that you cause. When you’re at fault in an accident, your liability insurance will only cover the other driver’s expenses, not yours.
