What is difference between NOL and AMT NOL?

A net operating loss (NOL) is defined as a taxpayer’s excess deductions over a taxpayer’s gross income. Similarly, AMT NOL is defined as deductions defined by alternative minimum tax rules over alternative minimum tax income (AMTI).

Do I have to calculate alternative minimum tax?

You only have to worry about the AMT if your adjusted gross income exceeds the exemption. If you make that much income or more, that’s the AMT taxable income. You may have to calculate your alternative minimum taxable income and pay the higher tax. You can do so on Form 6251.

Is NOL subject to AMT?

Alternative tax net operating loss (ATNOL) is the excess of deductions allowed over the income recognized for alternative minimum tax (AMT) purposes. It is calculated the same way that net operating losses (NOL) are, but with additional rules covering deductions, exclusions and preferences related to AMT.

The AMT exemption for 2020 is $113,400 for married couples filing jointly, up from $84,500 in 2017 (table 1). For singles and heads of household, the exemption rises from $54,300 in 2017 to $72,900 in 2020.

NOTE: As described below, an alternative minimum tax net operating loss (ATNOL) is not the same thing as an ATNOLD. Be careful to keep these separate concepts straight. An ATNOL is the AMT version of the NOL. Under Code Sec. 172 (c), an NOL is the excess of a taxpayer’s deductions over the taxpayer’s gross income.

Is the 90% Nol limitation allowed under the new rules?

Taxpayers may have believed that a quasi – alternative tax NOL calculation would be allowed under the new rules. If allowed, the 90% alternative tax NOL limitation for pre – TCJA years would also have to be included in the analysis.
