What kind of person is my 20 year old son?

By Robert Clark |

My son, 20, is disrespectful, ungrateful, and rude. When he gets angry, he yells, curses, and calls me every name in the book. This evening he even tried physical intimidation. Of course I backed down… When he gets like that, there’s just no reasoning with him. While he was fuming in his bedroom, I packed my bag and left the house.

How to deal with irresponsible kids at home?

No lectures, no preaching, no criticizing, no personalizing. Respect his ability to make choices, even if you don’t agree with them. Not letting you know he’s coming home for dinner is a choice. Respond to those choices from your own best and most responsible thinking and actions.

What kind of problems does my son have?

He has said some terrible things to his girlfriends, such as he wanted to go find other women just for sex. He has been arrested for pot 3x’s, at 19, 21, and 24 and has been on probation. He has a bad driving record which has affected his employment.

How old is my 29 year old son?

It seems as though he is wired with anxiety and frustration. My husband and I have been happily married for 35 years, both of us are stable with good careers. We have a 33 year old daughter, who is college educated, successful, married with a 1 year old in California.

Do you think my son has a mental health problem?

You do not believe he has any serious diagnosable mental health problem or you would have probably mentioned it. What we are left with is what I am afraid is not an uncommon situation: he is a young man with little life motivation who tends toward laziness and instant gratification and is rather self centered.
