What motivates you in your career as a seafarer?

A common motivation in going to sea is money, another is the lack of local employment opportunities and a third is pressure from family and friends. In addition some seafarers may wish to develop their skills at sea, in order to pursue a ‘portfolio career’.

Why did you choose marine transportation as your course?

Why did I choose Marine Transportation: It is because the salary is so big that is why I have chosen this course. Many Filipino seafarers are needed today by shipping industries. About my college education: We learned Seamanship, Marlaw, Chemistry, Math, Physics, Celestial Navigation, Marcom. All maritime studies.

What do you enjoy most about being a seafarer?

“The parts that I enjoy most about being a seaman would be the variety in work and the ability to utilize my mechanical skills. Every day is different and I really value that.”

What are the courses for Seaman?

Training and qualification Aspiring Filipino seamen are required to acquire degrees such as Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation and Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering or basic seaman course from maritime schools.

What is the difference between Seaman and seafarer?

As nouns the difference between seaman and seafarer is that seaman is a mariner or sailor, one who mans a ship opposed to landman or landsman while seafarer is a sailor or mariner.

Why do I love being a seafarer?

We meet different kinds of people of various nationalities and we become friends. And most of all, going ashore to our favorite places is like a dream come true. You can have a bunch of exciting stories to tell your friends and family when you return back home. And that is why I love being a seafarer.

Why do you want to become a seaman?

As a future professional, place and environment do not seem to matter because they are focused on a certain job position where they are going to apply their learned knowledge and skill. I want to become a seaman because traveling around the world will lead you to great places that make a memorable journey into your life.

Why did people choose a career at sea?

For many the sea meant freedom from oppression, and the chance to build a riches which would have been beyond them ashore. For others it was a better option than factories, squalor or agriculture. But are things so different today? Why do people still choose careers at sea, and do they like what they experience when they get there?

Hunger: Hunger is a key element in succeeding in the seafaring career. Hunger is what makes a candidate go ‘all out’ – to obtain and retain the job. A drive to keep on learning and growing shapes seafarers. Boldness: Seafaring is not for the shy, intimidated and fearful.
