It runs along, you guessed it, the Hudson River valley. There are no cities in Upstate NY that are commutable to NYC. The major cities of Upstate NY are Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Albany. Buffalo is 8 hours from NYC and Albany (the closest) is 4 hours.
