Why do they always use flashlights on CSI?

Before the viewer watches an animated sequence of a bullet passing thru a body, there will be a CSI looking at a bullet hole with a flashlight. The flashlight works as a marker to trigger anticipation in the viewer that something is about to revealed. They do the same thing with the blue UV lights to reveal blood.
