Why is my federal refund so low this year?

By Christopher Ramos |

One significant reason for lower refunds is that new tax laws and reforms that took effect a few years ago cut several popular deductions (e.g. personal exemption state and local taxes capping at $10,000) for a number of Americans.

Why are federal refunds taking so long?

There are several other reasons for delays too. With the advance child tax credit payments starting July 15 and weekly batches of stimulus checks going out (along with supplemental refunds for taxed unemployment benefits) the IRS is taking much longer than the standard 21 days to send refunds.

What was the income tax credit for 2010?

For 2009 and 2010, Congress gave workers a credit of 6.2 percent of their earned income, capped at $400 for single filers and $800 for joint filers. For single filers, the credit starts phasing out at $75,000 of Adjusted Gross Income and dries up at $95,000.

Why is my tax refund not what I expected?

If you answered that you haven’t received the first or second stimulus checks, a recovery rebate credit is calculated increasing your refund, but if the IRS did issue them to you, the IRS will adjust your refund amount accordingly. This lowers the refund amount that was initially calculated for you when your tax return was filed.

Which is better a refund or a non refundable tax credit?

Your actual benefit from this non-refundable tax credit is $1,500, not $2,000. If you pay enough taxes, it doesn’t matter whether a tax credit is refundable or non-refundable. Otherwise, a $100 refundable tax credit is better than a $100 non-refundable tax credit. The following table lists some of the tax credits in alphabetical order.

However, the 2020 tax season is unparalleled to any other tax year and will likely throw surprises at taxpayers who don’t plan ahead. It’s important to be prepared so you’re not shocked by the result when you file your income taxes.
